Math 316

Due March 21st or 22nd

Task Summary: The following is a brief summary of this assessment task.

Students develop an algebraic equation relating shoelace length and pairs of eyelets.

Feedback Checklist: Items in the checklist are aligned with the standard and describe the quality criteria for each piece of evidence. Items indicate what is being assessed and how well it needs to be demonstrated.

Task Description: Includes clear, step-by-step, instructions.

1.      You have been asked to take part in developing a new product for a company that sells shoelaces. Your specific charge is to create a graphic representation for consumers that states the length of lace needed for the number of pairs of a shoe’s eyelets. Starting with six eyelets (three on each side) and continuing up to 18 eyelets (nine on each side), determine how long the shoelaces should be.

 2.      Collect information by checking the length of shoelaces and number of eyelets on your classmates shoes.

 3.      Describe the relationship between the two variables (number of eyelets and length of shoelaces-24 inches for four eyelets, 36 inches for six eyelets). Develop an algebraic equation that represents this relationship.

 4.      Represent the information on a table or graph to help consumers know how long a shoelace to buy. Include predictions for several heights of shoes or boots (mid-calf, knee high etc.)

 5.      In a summary, describe the pattern you found in your table or graph.

 6.      Determine what happens to the lengths of shoelaces when individual tastes include wrapping the lace once or more before tying or double knotting. Include in your summary what this does to your pattern.
