Compare the sentences in the pairs below, keying in on the meanings.  Is there any difference between the two sentences in each pair?

1. Jane goes to NDSU, and Sue goes to MSUM. Jane and Sue are alike
2. Jane goes to NDSU, but Sue goes to MSUM. Jane and Sue are different

1. Dan began work every day at 9:00, for he hated his job. His attitude affects the time he goes; he goes late.
2. Dan began work every day at 9:00, so he hated his job. The job start time affects his attitude because it's early.
