Activity 15.1: Reviewing Clauses and Nouns

Review:  What is the definition of a clause?  What is a noun?  What is a noun phrase?  What functions does a noun phrase typically play in a sentence?

A clause is a group of words with a subject-predicate pairing.

A noun is a word that refers to a person place, or thing. A noun phrase is a group of words that consists of a noun as the head and all the others words and phrases that modify that noun.

A noun is typically the
  1. Subject
  2. Direct Object
  3. Indirect Object
  4. Object of a Preposition
  5. Subject Complement
  6. Object Complement
  7. Appositive

Reflect: What do you suppose is the definition of a noun clause?  Draw a comparison between an adverb clause and a noun clause.

A noun clause is a group of words with a subject-predicate pairing that functions in the same ways a noun phrase typically functions ins a sentence.

Noun clauses are similar to adverb clauses because both are subordinate clauses that attach to other main clauses.
