Student Teachers

Student/practicum teachers will enter the student teaching experiences with different levels of experience and expertise. It is very important to try and determine your developmental level so you will understand what supervision style the cooperating teacher may use and why.

The Four Stages Supervision Style

High Supportive and Low Directive Behavior              S3

High Directive and High Supportive Behavior                  S2

Low Supportive and Low Directive Behavior               S4

High Directive and Low Supportive Behavior                 S1

Helping to understand what stage you may be, makes it easier to understand why the cooperating teacher is providing you with supportive and/or directive feedback. It may be also interesting and rewarded for yourself as become aware of passing through the particular stages. (Also it is not expected that practicum teachers achieve state S4.)

Level S1 (Directive Stage)

  1. Student that has no past job experience and no problems solving abilities.

Level S2 (Coaching Stage)

  1. Student has job knowledge and demonstrates the ability to take responsibility but still requires a lot of guidance.

Level S3 (Supporting Stage)

  1. Student has great initiative and motivation plus some job knowledge.
  2. Student requires praise to assure her/him that she is doing a good job.

Level S4 (Delegating Stage)

  1. Student has past experience, initiative, motivation, and independent skills.
  2. Very little directive and praise are needed.
