GEOS 116 Assignment 2 – My Favorite Sloss Sequence
Paper
- Look in your textbook and decide what you favorite sequence is (Sauk, Tippecanoe,
Kaskaskia, Absaroka, Zuni, or Tejas)
- Write a 2-5 page paper about this seuence. In the paper you should include:
a) the Periods and duration of time included in the sequence; b) What bounds
the sequence; c) the major events (glaciation, mountain building, etc.) that
take place during the sequence, and the possible effects of these events;
and d) what life is like during this sequence (what are the common life forms
on the planet at this time, what first appears during this period of earth
history, and what are the major events that happen during this sequence (diversification,
extinction, etc.). Keep it concise and to the point, and organize it in the
standard way (three parts => Introduction, Body, and Summary and Conclusions).
Clearly state the focus (the part that interests you) of your topic in the
Introduction, and then write the supporting statements, in an organized way,
in the Body of the paper.
- You must have at least 3 references for this paper (one of these may include
the textbook).
- You must reference statements in your paper that are not common knowledge,
or whenever you present information extracted from your sources. Use the Harvard
System…. You will find that it is the standard in scientific publications….
and is much easier to apply than footnotes. When referencing a statement,
put the Author and Date of Publication at the end of the sentence in parentheses,
e. g., Rocks can be hard if they hit you in the head (Poindexter, 1999). Or
put the Authors name in the sentence, with the date of publication bracketed,
e.g., Poindexter (1999) claims that rocks are hard.
- References then should be listed, in alphabetical order at the end of your
paper in the following style:
o Author, Date, Title: Journal or Book title, Volume, Page #’s
