Article Presenters are expected to lead a 20-minute PowerPoint presentation and discussion about their assigned article.
Begin with a summary of the study--You may do the summary yourself or ask targeted questions to involve your peers in the summary of the study.
Lead discussion. Do not simply ask for responses from the assigned discussion questions. Instead use the assigned discussion questions as a springboard for deeper, focused questioning in a few areas of your choosing. Focus on stats and methods issues, interpreting the data, as well as content areas that interest you. Reminder: This is a 400-level course; your material should reflect this. Do not simply provide basic definitions and quotes from texts. Go beyond the basics to apply the information or ask thought provoking questions that require an in-depth understanding of research methodology and statistics. Consider incorporating a related, more recent study.
Use some visuals (e.g., the data, supporting definitions) and outside resources (e.g., webpages that illustrate a point or example, another relevant research article, etc) to help the audience focus on your questions and to provide prompts/background/support for answers (should your audience be stumped).
Beyond the summary, I would suggest you prepare about three main questions (some of those may contain shorter follow-up questions) to be sure you fill your minutes. The best discussion questions do not necessarily have a right or wrong answer. Instead, it's important to support one's answer with evidence from the article or wider literature. If you do not get to all of your questions, that is okay as long as your time was filled with relevant, productive, well-reasoned discussion about your assigned article and research design.
Please submit your PowerPoint presentation to the D2L Article Presentation folder by 11:00 am the morning of your presentation.
You are responsible for your portion of class on your assigned discussion day. If an emergency arises, inform the professor ASAP.
