Part 1

This exercise requires the use of electronic databases to conduct a lit. search.  Quick Reference Card

1. Search PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES (make sure no other databases are selected) for research concerning amnesia and implicit memory. Limit your search to journal articles written in English. Also, make sure the search is for articles published from 2001 to current.

**Use the print icon to print the complete list of results with the parameters of the search (exactly what you typed and which boxes you selected) included at the end. If the parameters of your search are not clearly displayed on your printout, then hand write them on the printout.

 

2. Select one article from your search that is available in full-text and print the entire article (first make sure that you can understand, in general, what the article is about).

 

3. For your chosen article, write or type the following information on a separate sheet of paper.

            (a) Author(s)

            (b) Institution or affiliation for each author

            (c) Title of the article

            (d) Journal name, year published, volume, page numbers

            (e) General purpose of the article

            (f) Specific hypothesis or hypotheses

            (g) Summary of results or conclusions

           

 Part 2

This portion of the assignment involves evaluating ethical issues in proposed research projects . During your lab session, the professor will assign and distribute one scenario to you. For each numbered item, please type your answers on a separate sheet of paper using correct grammar and punctuation. Be sure to include the letter of your scenario.

Scenario _____

  1. Briefly describe the ethical issues raised in the scenario, making sure to explain why you have cited the concern.
  2. Assign a rating of the moral/ethical cost of the study from 0 (no ethical/moral cost) to 10 (highest ethical/moral cost) and justify briefly (refer to #1 above).
  3. Assign a rating of the potential benefits of the study from 0 (no practical or theoretical benefits) to 10 (highest practical or theoretical benefits) and justify briefly.
  4. If you were an IRB member (or IACUC member) would you approve this research?  Explain why or why not. Explain changes you would need to see before you would grant approval.
