Exam 3 will be given on Wednesday April 30th. It will cover material from Chapters 4, 7, 10, & 11 in Gezon & Kottak's text, my lectures, and any videos shown in class. Just as with the first two exams the format for the exam will be multiple choice, true-false, and matching.

The World System and Colonialism

  • Gezon & Kottak Chapter 11.
  • Know what the world system is, how it originated, and what its constituent parts are.
  • Understand how the world system operates today. In particular, you should know what the major forces influencing cultural interaction have been during the past 500 years. You also should understand the current relationship between core, semiperiphery, and periphery nations, as well as how industrialism and the world system have impacted traditional, indigenous societies.
  • Understand the causes of the Industrial Revolution, and why it began in Britain (rather than in France).
  • Know what colonialism is. In particular, you should understand the differences between French and British colonialism.
  • Understand the effects that colonialism has had on political divisions and ethnic identities throughout the world. Know what postcolonial studies consist of.
  • Be able to define intervention philosophy, including current notions of development, and to give some examples.
  • Know what neoliberalism is and understand its current role in development and socioeconomic reform, particularly in postsocialist nations.
  • Understand the negative effects of industrialism, such as the destruction of indigenous economies, ecologies, and populations.
