ANTH 380/Traditional Cultures
Nigeria
The Context:
In July-August 2002 I found
myself in
Kogi State, in what is known as Nigeria's
"middle belt". I was there at the invitation of
Prince Aububakar Audu, II, who at the time was the
Governor of Kogi State. His Palace was in Lokoja, which is a town very
close to the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers. Along with 7 other
professors from MSUM and NDSU I was participating in a curriculum review at a
local university. My colleagues and I were "stationed" at Prince Aububakar Audu
University (PAAU), outside Anyigba in Kogi State (the team is actually mentioned
in the
Wikipedia entry for the Prince. Previously (and subsequently)
it was/is
Kogi State University. You
see, after the
governor was elected he decided to rename the university in his own honor. After
he lost the 2003 election, it went back to Kogi State University.
Here are some photos that (can't even really begin to)
capture some of that experience! They're thumbnails, so if you click on the
image it will enlarge.
