The photograph on this web page shows the monument in Pisa to Leonardo of Pisa, called Fibonacci, a thirteenth century mathematician.  Fibonacci worked toward the introduction of Arabic numerals into Europe and was noted for work in number theory.  He also introduced the Fibonacci sequence which has intrigued mathematicians in recent times.
