Lecture Information: Classical
Conditioning Application
For this section of the Grand Round assignment, I
have to allow for a maximum amount of flexibility. Yet at the
same time, you should keep in mind the "dynamic" model when applying
this theory. I want you to use the notations for the dynamic
model like US, NS, CR, and so on. Also you should employ the
same step by step process when expanding on this theory. If
there are instances of the further implications of Classical
Conditioning as well then they also need to be mentioned.
In applying this theory, you should keep in mind a
few very common mistakes that people make. First of all, it is
only classical conditioning if the response to the stimuli is a
physiological, involuntary, or reflexive response like some of
the following: sweat, heart rate, blush, pale, etc. It is very
common to confuse classical conditioning with operant conditioning.
The two theories are very different as you will discover in
the next lesson. Second, people tend to only look at the
negative side of pairing through associations, that of phobic
formations. While these phobias will be extremely easy to
spot in your future students, they are not too common. What is
much more common is a positive association. The tying of
positive emotions to events in a student's life. There is in
fact a rather strong link between what is commonly referred to as
"social/emotional learning" and effective memory strategies.
If your student has a phobia, then by all means use CC to explain
how the association occurred, but please be aware that there doesn't
have to be a phobia.
