Lecture Information:  Social Goals

  1. Social Orientation:
School, for this type of orientation, is merely a vehicle to make and maintain friends for their support group.  Actual school work is almost looked at as a distraction from the main point of school which is to see your friends and interact with them.  This type of student embodies the saying, "Don't let school get in the way of an education!"
  2. "Socialite" Characteristics:
    1. Hanging out:
For this student, being seen is more important than anything in the classroom as far as learning.  They often get to class either "just in time" or about 1 minute late.  They are always with their groups of students in hallways or parking lots.
    2. Clubber:
These students tend to be fairly active in many of the extra-curricular clubs, sports, or activities that a school might offer.  They put most of their emphasis on these kind of activities rather than on academics.  It is not unusual for them to spend unreasonable amounts of time on the homecoming float, but never really take a math book home.
    3. Manipulator/Leader:
These folks can be rather good for work groups in that they are naturally social and if you can make the assignment clear enough for them, they will take over leadership of the project.  On the other hand, they can be rather manipulative as well.  Only choosing to associate with those who can further their agendas.
