Lecture Information: Maslow's hierarchy is usually a favorite one of most students, mostly because it has such clear cut application to your life. It is very relatable. In clinical terms this is called "face validity." As a practicing teacher, you will find that the pyramid really helps to explain why a child that has a safety issue let's say, like being bullied, has a very difficult time in your class. He is having to try and address two levels of need at once, maintain a safe environment and learn in your classroom. Since safety is lower on the pyramid it is more likely to get all of the student's attention. In short, they are going to want to keep their nose from being bloodied more than master fractions. Your assignment for this lesson is to place your student at the LOWEST level that is still an issue for them. You can, if you choose to, comment on multiple levels of needs presenting themselves at the same time, but the lowest one of them is the actual level of the student. Maslow would say that people take care of their most primitive needs first before progressing. |
