Lecture Information:
Elements of Attributions
- Locus
The location of
the cause of the behavior from the point of view of the speaker has only
two possibilities
- Internal
to the speaker
- The speaker may believe
that the cause is inside of them That it is a matter
of their choice, talent, physical capabilities or biological
disposition.
- Examples: Genetics,
Emotions, Judgments, Interpretations, Physical abilities, etc.
- External
to the speaker
- The speaker may believe
that the cause is outside of them. That it is a matter of
a convergence of many factors from other sources than
themselves.
- Examples: Society,
Family, Luck, Religion, Weather, etc.
- Stability
The endurance of the belief is the question with this element,
and again Wiener sees it as one of two different possibilities.
- Changeable
State
- The speaker may believe
that the result is due to just a temporary, fleeting, momentary
occurrence.
- Examples: Sick that day,
Other priorities, Hard work, Good/bad luck, Confusion,
- Unchangeable

- The speaker may believe
that the result is due to a more enduring trait, a condition of
their everyday life.
- Examples: Height, Race,
Genetics, God-given Talent, Intelligence, Hatred of others,
- Responsibility
The accountability
of the belief is the issue for this element which again has only two
alternatives
- Controllable
- The speaker may hold
themselves liable for the outcomes of their life. They may
feel like they are the one's who have their hands on the
steering wheel of their life.
- Examples: Judgment, Taste,
Interests, Determination, Achievement, etc.
- Uncontrollable
- The speaker may hold other
entities liable for the outcomes of their life. They may
feel that other people have their hands on the steering wheel of
their lives.
- Examples: Blamers of other
people, Sun got in my eyes, "God/Coach/Teacher" hates me,
