David Carter, Associate Professor of History and History Department Graduate Program Officer, received his PhD from Duke University in 2001 and a BA with Highest Honors in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992. Dr. Carter's research interests are in the history of the civil rights movement, the history of the American South since the Civil War, and U.S. history since 1945. He is particularly drawn to the role of race and ideology in shaping American history.
