April 20: The readings for today are web-based, located on a fun history webjournal called CommonPlace (www.common-place.org, vol.1 no. 4, July 2001.) This unit is about reading and understanding the meanings behind slave spirituals. We will read two articles from CommonPlace and try out hand at interpreting the spirituals listed on the page. We will also read an excerpt from Slavery by Stanley Elkins and use that to evaluate these spirituals.
Make certain you click on all the links inside the articles as we will discuss those as well.
The Lion's Den, Gloria Sesso --Make sure you take the time to examine The Old Plantation painting when reading this page.
