Academic Advising

Advising process

Academic advising is a collaborative process between a student and a faculty member to make the best plan possible regarding coursework, student organizations, volunteer work, and other extracurricular activities that will help prepare for the student's future goals. The student's role in the advising process is important - considering your interests and career goals, seeking out opportunities to build your background and skills, and performing at your best in all of your coursework. As your advisor, I will help you figure out not only which classes to take, but also suggest volunteer opportunities, research experiences, and other relevant advice on your development as a well-rounded student.

You can prepare for an advising meeting by reviewing your electronic record (DAR) found on eServices. This record lists which requirements you've already met and which ones are left before you graduate. You can look at the next semester's course schedule on eServices and make a list of courses to take. We'll discuss these courses and any others that might be appropriate during our advising meeting. It's often helpful to write down a list of questions you might have for your advisor, because it's easy to forget or get off track during the meeting.

Having trouble in one or more classes?

Talk to the professor of your class and ask for help understanding course concepts and gaining study strategies. You can also talk to your advisor, who can help you with general study skills, help you get in contact with the Academic Success Center for a tutor, or help in other ways depending on the situation. The most important thing when struggling in a class is to get help in the course as soon as possible and make changes to your study habits. Every student struggles with some classes throughout their time in college; you aren't alone, and you aren't the only one having trouble in the class. Everyone can benefit from extra help. Even your professors have gotten help in areas that were difficult for them! Take advantage of the resources available to you to achieve the highest success that you can!
