For class on WED 10/16, instead of an ICQ, I ask you to type a 1-page teq-style Essay to bring to class for discussion. everyone shall speak!!! the pages I wish to ask you to focus on are pp. 3-30 (not up to p. 34) in sam watkins' company aytch - and I ask that your 1-page essays focus on the pages assigned to you - your choice of what grabs you within those pages. And, of course, read Th. Inge's Introduction + the preface, as in the syllabus. so:

- in chapter 1 - "we are one ..." to "on the road": pp. 3-9: katarina, allison, andy, morgan, bry, shaina, sam

- "Staunton" to "sewell mountain": pp. bottom9-mid16: tom, nate, katie, zach, nick, breann, dhurim,

- "Romney" to "Virginia, farewell": pp.mid16-24: brooke, erica, renae, chelsea, emma, etta, briana

- ch. 2= "shiloh": 25-30: sarah, amanda, melissa, katy, alex

*** syllabus news - mon, nov. 25th - yes!!! we do have class: reading = assigned pages in tros as in our syllabus = pp. 225-249. due that class-day teq #5 from everyone - typed 1 page - focus on pp. 236-249 = on how southern citizens undertook re/burial of confederate soldiers: objective & subjective parts

*** reminder: in about 1 month - on wed, nov. 6th - 1st group of 5 reader-viewer's reflection-response 4-page essays due: you'll selectively focus on how our book tros by d.g.f. complements (= helps us to better appreciate) the documentary "death and the civil war" (and how the film similarly helps us to appreciate the book). nate & tom & katerina & allison & bry

9/11/2013  -  Essential themes of the typical Condolence letter sent to relatives of deceased soldiers to console their mourning hearts and unburden their minds of whether their loved one (son, brother, father, husband, ...) died a "good death" -
1. Consciousness of his fate = awareness of imminent death and of facing the prospect of dying = confrontation
2. willingness to accept life's end for a noble cause, for good reasons out of self-sacrifice = resignation
3. belief in his soul's eternal destiny in the heavenly kingdom - faith in god's blessing upon his soul's redemption = salvation
4. his messages to those living left behind (= family members, companions, ...) and his words of counsel = exhortation
