10/10/05 - Last week, I handed out a paper-copy of the Midterm Review-Pages Sheet in class, as per our Syllabus. I have copies in my office. Today we'll do our Retrospective and I'll present the exam-format as below:
The format of the Midterm for HUM 214, both sections, will have 5 PARTS: I - Short essay-Questions on Sculpture & Architecture: 2 out of 4 @ 5 points - Contrast/Compare with a pair of items in each question; II - Matching Column - 10 names @ 1 point; III - Quotations - 9 @ 1 point to match with names; IV - Short Essay-Question on Literature: 1 out of 2 @ 5 points: 1) dialogue between Achilles & King Priam; 2) dialogue between Haemon & King Creon; V - Take-home Typed Essay-Question.@ 6 points, due Monday 10/17: topic focussed on Marcus Aurelius, and explicitly stated on the exam-paper itself - you will tear along a dotted-line and take it with you after finishing your in-class Parts I-IV.

12/7/05 - 5:15 p.m - Folks, Today we had our Retrospective, and I presented the exam-format - here it is again. For those of you who weren't in class today, I have copies of the Review-pages sheet in my office.
FIRST: from the Review-pages sheet delete, near the bottom, "R 2.26 ... class" AND "169a-b ... era"
SECOND: the Final Exam will, like the Midterm, equal 40 points, not 35 points, as I indicated today. The more points the better!
THIRD: the exam-format will be similar to the Midterm's - and I'll provide the lined paper. On the exam-day, I will appreciate very much your doing the Course Evaluations after you finish your exams. So, here's the format:
PART I - Short Essay-Questions: Choose 2 out of 3 @ 4 points = 8 points The subject matter of these will all derive from the Western European tradition, and will include arts and literature. As with the Midterm, each of the 3 E-Qs will have 2 elements, and in # 1 and # 2 you will CONTRAST them (= presenting differences), and in # 3 you will COMPARE them (= presenting parallels).
PART II - Matching Column of 10 names @ 1 pt. = 10 points
PART III - Quotations: just like the Midterm, you will match 6 names to 6 quotations @ 1 pt. = 6 points The names will include both fictional and historical figures.
PART IV - I call this Identifications. It is different from the Midterm. Here you will find 6 names of historical figures and you will write a paragraph about your choices = 4 out of 6 at 2.50 pts. = 10 points. There will be an A section and a B section: A = you will choose 2 out of 3 political figures and, in each case, present his historical importance; that is, What did he accomplish of importance? = What he is known for? And in each case it will NOT be just one thing. As for B, you will choose 2 out of 3 religious figures, responding to similar questions: namely, What did he accomplish of importance? = What is he known for? And, again, in each SEVERAL things will be involved.
PART V - is your Take-home typed Essay-Question @ 6 points. At least one solid page, standard typeface, double-spaced, with single-spacing for quotations longer than 2 lines. You (= everybody, from BOTH classes) must deliver this to me, or at my office, by NO LATER THAN 4 p.m. of the afternoon of Monday 12/12.You will choose 1 out of 2 Meditations from Marcus: either BOOK SIX, # 30 = pages 75-76, or BOOK TEN, # 8 = p.134. In both cases, Marcus "meditates" on a number of VIRTUES that he tells himself he must put into practice. Highlight what he tells himself: that is, choosing several virtues explain their meanings and how he intends to apply them in his life. That will be HALF of your essay; in the second half, respond to this question: Do you think that these virtues/qualities of character (= "epithets") are still applicable to US today in 21st-century America? And to YOU as an individual?
See you on Friday 12/9 and on Monday 12/12. Good Luck with all your exams!
