FALL 2014 - ESSAY GUIDELINES: Greetings! O studious Students of mine! Here are the pertinent points concerning your typed Objective/Subjective Reader's Reflection-Response Essay of 3-4 pages.
1a. Please read in our Syllabus on the Objective/Subjective Essay. but to reiterate: every student will be obliged to compose fully 3 typed pages @ 100 points. These will be done alphabetically by last-names and staggered beginning in WEEK IV, thus as of Thursday, 9/18. Over 10 weeks from then on, your typed Essays will be handed in to me in class on that day as scheduled below. or dropped off at my office/PHIL Dept or, if necessary, sent to me as an e-mail Attachment (preferably formatted as a WORD document) - NOT as a casual e-mail - on the due-date.
1b. Each and every student will be expected to present in his/her Essay their choice of topic = 1) OBJECTIVELY = WHAT they chose and WHY they made that choice, and 2) SUBJECTIVELY share with me, your Reader, their main points/reflections/insights/... regarding WHAT they presented in the first-half of their typed Essay.
2. Regarding the subject of your Essay, you may write about ANY topic/theme/issue/person/traditional practice/... of particular interest to you sparked/stimulated by something encountered in our IWR book, such as a personal experience that you can relate to, say, a ritual described in a chapter. Be both Objective = present the WHAT with some textual/narrative details, and Subjective = explaining WHY your topic grabbed you = why you found the WHAT intriguing or interesting or perhaps even personally meaningful.
3. Feel free (not required) to consult other sources (books, web-sites, fellow students, ...), but your own ideas/reflections are what's most significant. What's important to you to write about will be interesting for me to read about. As for your "style" and format = the writing & the typing as such: use 12-point standard font, standard spacing (= double-spaced & 1-inch margins), with logical expression in grammatically correct sentences. Proofread! Include a title-page with a thematic/descriptive title that indicates your chosen topic-focus.
4. As you compose your thoughts, please reflect upon the LASC/Dragon Core #7 Competencies as presented in our Syllabus on p. 2, section B. LASC/DC Goal #7: Human Diversity. As you ponder the 6 goals, ask yourself which one (or more) of these 6 you touch upon or directly address in your Essay AND say so explicitly - if briefly and succinctly - in your Concluding Paragraph.
5. I trust the above is helpful. Feel free to come talk with me for guidance I'd be happy to offer. Your Reflection-Response Essay will be intellectually rewarding for you to write and delightful informative for me to read - with excellent grades guaranteed! There is really no incorrect way to present your ideas.
6. WHEN IN CLASS, let us ALL be respectful listeners, attentive to our classmates, guest-presenters, and me your prof. PLEASE refrain from rude, disruptive chatting, cell-phone use/texting/laptop-viewing/emailing.
And so, PLEASE, when your prof/guest-prof/classmate is speaking, listen respectfully and be eager to benefit from what might be totally new, or a reminder of something familiar, or an echo of what you're thinking.
7. Here is the alphabetical order of students per specified date over 10 weeks. You can find your place among the alphabetically-by-last-name staggered groups. I encourage ALL OF US to dialogue as a seminar-class, and to do so informally but courteously in language and tone, and freely and spontaneously.
