Lecture Information: Applying Skinner's Model for learning

This subsection of the Grand Round assignment is really a straight forward one.  If it doesn't make total sense, then you need to start all over again.  Start with the A-B-C model when applying this theory to your student.  Follow the outline below:

  • Antecedents:

    • Everything in the environment that precedes the action from the student.

      • Time of day

      • Physical Position

      • Students around him/her

      • Subject being taught

      • Ambient temperature in the classroom

      • EVERYTHING!

    • Should be absolutely, perfectly clear, logical harbinger/cue/predictor for the subsequent behavior.

  • Behavior:

    • Name exactly what the student did.

  • Consequences:

    • From Skinner's point of view there are only two possible consequences

      • Reinforcement - The student's behavior is encouraged.  You will likely see an increase in frequency, duration, or magnitude.

      • Punishment - The student's behavior is discouraged. You will likely see a decrease in frequency, duration, or magnitude.

Then lastly, you can simply list very effective reinforcement techniques and punishment techniques.
