Activity 11.7: Answers

All of the following sentences have phrasal verbs.  Underline the phrasal verbs.  Then try to group them according to similarities.

  1. Billy always picked on Bobby.
  2. Bobby never gave in.
  3. The other kids often butted in.
  4. They looked out for the insults, and they stood by Bobby.
  5. As a result, Bobby brushed off Billy’s insults, and he brushed the threats off, too.
  6. Bobby didn’t pay back the insults, and he didn’t pay the threats back, either.

 

Groupings:
Intransitive: give in, butt in
Transitive: pick on, look out for, stand by, brush off, pay back
Separable: brush off, pay back
Inseparable: pick on, look out for, stand by

Principle:
Intransitive v. Transitive
Separable v. Inseparable
