Lab 3 - Level Nets

Purpose:

This lab will expose you to direct differential leveling over long distances. You will be expected to complete the work to a higher level of accuracy than in lab 2.

Equipment required:

  • Automatic level
  • Tripod
  • Level rod

Procedure:

  • Run the level net shown, starting at BM #11, elevation 908.00 ft. Use the standard note form for differential leveling. Take turns taking shots, and agree on a reading before writing it down. Move the level between each benchmark. Close back on BM #11, perform the standard math checks, and compute any misclosure. Total misclosure must be less than 0.10 ft. Adjust your elevations to reflect your errors, and record the adjusted elevations in your field book..

BM #11 Hydrant, SE of Hagen Hall, SEFB, Assumed elevation 908.00'

BM #8 Hydrant, NE of the center of the mall, SEFB

BM #9 Hydrant, N of the Center for the Arts, SEFB

BM #10 Hydrant, NE of Bridges Hall, SEFB

BM #11 Hydrant, SE of Hagen Hall, SEFB

  • Run the level net shown starting with BM #2, elevation 906.34 ft. Each crew member should read the instrument for some of the shots. Clearly mark in your field book who took which shots. Close back on BM #2, perform the standard math checks, and compute misclosure. Total misclosure must be less than 0.10 ft. Adjust your elevations to reflect your errors. Show the math for the adjustments. Record the adjusted elevations. Submit your field book for grading.
