Lab 4 - Closing the Horizon
Purpose:
This lab will provide experience with the process of
"double centering," to eliminate errors and highlight any mistakes
made in the process of turning angles using a transit or theodolite.
Equipment Required:
- Digital Transit
- Tripod
- Tripod Stand
Procedure:
A series of points have been identified along the walls
in Hagen 110. They look like this:
A transit station, O, is marked on the floor. You are
to do the following:
- Set the transit up over point "O." Level,
and sight on point A. Assume that the line from O to A runs true north.
- Points A through E are located on the walls of the
lab. Find each point, and confirm that you have a clear line of site
to each point from your set-up. Turn angles AOB, BOC, COD, DOE, and
EOA four times each. (Note that for each angle, you should have a set
of notes starting at 0 and repeating. If angle AOB measures 30°, your notes should show readings approaching 30°, 60°, 90°, and 120°.)
- Determine your angular misclosure. (the total of the
five angles should be 360° )
- Determine the bearing of lines OA, OB, OC, OD, and
OE.
