Introduction to Verbs and Verb PhrasesThus far in looking at the structure of simple sentences in English, we have focused on sentence types, the structure of the simple sentence, and variations in the sentence patterns that accompany differing types of sentences, such as questions, existential there sentences, and other sentences with nonreferential subjects. We have also learned that every sentence has a subject and a predicate and that sentence patterns depend on the verb type used in the sentence. We have learned that the verb is found in the predicate. In this chapter we will begin to explore the verb in English and then continue to look more deeply into it in subsequent chapters. Here we will focus on the definition of a verb and identify the subcategories of verbs. We will also identify its basic forms, called principal parts, and look at the forms it takes in sentences. In particular, we will concern ourselves with the forms of the imperative and the indicative active. We will also learn about the tense and aspect system in English. It is recommended that you download and print the material linked under Reference, Meanings and References. The information will be needed for some of the activities.
