We may sometimes feel we don't have time to go to conferences but it's a great way to take time to think and regain a perspective on why we do what we do. I have had the opportunity to attend and present at conferences which has helped me maintain my focus and meet a wide variety of people.

My presentation material listed below includes the "Connecting..." presentations which are slightly different versions of each other and discuss connecting neuroscience to a study cycle and other details of learning. "Learning How to Learn" discusses prevention of anxiety and developing healthy study habits which are tied to the neuroscience of learning. "Assessing While Learning" continues to apply neuroscience to learning and moving memories from short term to long term memory, as well as, giving the brain a break and checking the student's understanding using formative assessments.

Assessing While Learning (slide presentation), MCTM/MinnMATYC, Duluth, 2022, which includes these topics and including the following online tools:

Mentimeter.com
Socrative.com
Whiteboard.fi

Also, a couple of articles referred to in the presentation include:

The Math Ceiling - Ben Orlin

Unintended consequences in best practices - Lana Walker

Little Things Make a Difference, MinnMATYC, video, 2021

Mathematics Placement using MyMathTest, MNADE 2018, Brainerd, Minnesota, Handout

Learning How to Learn, MNADE 2018, Brainerd, Minnesota, Handout

Additional documents:

Illusions of Competence - This is an article for the students to read regarding what illusions of competence is and study methods to avoid the illusions.

Self-Regulation Activity 1 - This contains a couple of questions that are given to the students at the beginning of the semester to help start the process of them taking responsibility for regulating their learning.

Self-Regulation Activity 2 - This activity as given after a test to help the student self assess the results of a test and reflect on the results.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. I would love to hear how you are implementing/interpreting neuroscience research in your classroom or any books or resources that you have found helpful.
